KEYSER, W.Va. — Area agencies have the chance to apply for federal economic stimulus funding for transportation enhancement, recreational trails, scenic byways and safe routes to schools.

West Virginia Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox announced Friday that as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, approximately $6 million will be made available in addition to the traditional 2009 grant programs.

The funding will be divided among the congressional districts at approximately $2 million each. Projects must have a relation to surface transportation and require a minimum of 20 percent sponsor-matching funds, which must be paid up front.

Applicants must be able to begin the project within six months and complete it within two years.

The West Virginia Division of Highways will be given the first option to administer the projects from design through construction with input from the sponsor.

The deadline to submit applications is June 30 at 5 p.m. Log on to
