Eckards celebrate anniversary

CASWELL BEACH, N.C. — Ronald and Norma Schade Eckard of Caswell Beach recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their favorite restaurant, Joseph's Italian Bistro at South Harbor in Oak Island.

This was the first family gathering possible in 19 years, which made the occasion extremely special. During this time, the family also celebrated the 16th birthday of  their two granddaughters, Christine Allison and Allison Dozier.

Ronald and Norma are former residents of the area. Ron graduated from Ridgeley High School in 1957 and Norma completed high school in 1958 at Fort Hill High School. They met while working at Rosenbaum's Department Store and were married March 25, 1960, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Cumberland, Md.

Ron is the son of the late Vera Breedlove Eckard and George Eckard of Ridgeley, W.Va. Norma is the daughter of Wanda McKee Davidson and Charles Davidson and the late Homer Schade and Virginia Binnix Schade, all from Cumberland.

Ron retired from IBM in 2001 after 32 years. In the early years of his career he was an IBM customer engineer and software programmer in West Virginia and metropolitan Maryland. He re-tired as an IBM advisory software engineer in the Software Development Laboratory at Research Triangle Park.

Norma began her career as a teacher in the public school systems in Maryland and West Virginia. After earning her doctorate from the University of Maryland, College Park, she became a faculty member at North Carolina State University in the College of Education and Psychology located in Raleigh. While at North Carolina State University she coordinated the Student Literacy Corps in addition to teaching classes to prospective teachers and graduate students. She later extended her career as a professor at Campbell University in the School of Education, coordinating elementary education and the computer laboratory. She retired from Campbell University in 1997.

Ron and Norma are the parents of three daughters, Lorraine Eckard and husband Martin Maness of Wheeling, W.Va; Dale Lynn Morrison of Hickory; and Amy Eckard and husband Sam Allison of Raleigh.

The couple have six grandchildren: Rachel and Allison Dozier; Shaun, Christine and Michelle Allison; and step-grandson Marty Maness.
