Leonards celebrate anniversary

HAGERSTOWN — Patricia and Cordell Leonard of Hagerstown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 26, 2011, at the Greenbrier Resort, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Family and childhood friends were in attendance to share this special event in their life.

The couple was married March 26, 1961, in Weston, W.Va., by the Rev. John Hardman at the home of the bride. The best man was Robert Leonard, brother of the groom. The maid of honor was Sandy Jane McQuain-Cayton, cousin of the bride.

Dr. Leonard is the daughter of the late Goldie and Andrew Harold Mace of Weston and former residents of LaVale.

Mr. Leonard is the son of the late Agnes and Lloyd Leonard of Weston.

The Leonards are the parents of one son, Jonathan Seth Leonard, of Gainesville, Fla., and one daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Mae Kim and husband, Dr. Preston Kim, of Ellicott City. They also have three grandchildren, Abigail Helen Kim, Sarah Elizabeth Kim and Daniel Y. Kim.

Pastor Mark Mooney, former pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Smithsburg, offered the dinner prayer. The dinner and anniversary cake were prepared by the Greenbrier. The feature of the cake was the original topper that decorated the Leonards’ wedding cake of 1961. During the evening, videos of the couple’s family, friends and events were shared with the guests. Dr. D.J. Bumgarner, from Marietta, Ohio, lifelong friend of the couple, served as the master of ceremonies as family and friends shared their memories about the couple. Photographers were Marianne and Joe Elliott, also close family friends from Smithsburg.

Cordell is a 1956 graduate of Weston High School and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from West Virginia University. In 1961, he began his teaching career at Jackson Junior High School in Vienna, W.Va. In 1965, the couple moved to Hagerstown, where Cordell taught at Clear Spring High School, South Potomac Junior High School and E. Russell Hicks Middle School. He retired in 2001 after teaching 40 years.

Patricia is a 1957 graduate of Weston High School and a 1961 graduate of Glenville State College. She also received her master’s degree in administration in 1965 from West Virginia University, and doctorate in educational leadership in 1983 from Southeastern University of Florida. She began her teaching career at Emerson Elementary School in Parkersburg, W.Va. Dr. Leonard retired from the Washington County School System in 2003 after serving over 24 years as an elementary school principal and teaching 12 years in Williamsport Elementary and Middle schools.

Following this retirement, Patricia  has been employed as an adjunct professor at Kaplan University and a university supervisor and instructor of graduate students in the master of arts teaching program at Frostburg State University, Frostburg.

Patricia and Cordell reside in Hagerstown and spend their weekends at their home in LaVale, where Patricia lived until 1956. She and Cordell met after her family moved to Weston in 1956. The couple are active members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and numerous community organizations in Washington County. Dr. Leonard is also a member of the Maryland Salem Children’s Trust Executive Board of Directors located in Garrett County, Alpha Kappa and Children’s Village Executive Board in Hagerstown.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with a trip to Hawaii. They plan to take a future trip to Israel and Greece.
