Processed wastewater from Mexico Farms is being applied to farm fields in Mount Savage and other areas of Allegany County by Synagro. The wastewater has been registered as a soil amendment by the Maryland Department of Agriculture, according to the Maryland Department of the Environment. The wastewater is obtained from the Fibred company, a manufacturer of food grade cellulose fiber from soybean hulls. The Synagro arrangement was authorized as an acceptable alternative to spray irrigation at the Mexico Farms facility. It is part of an approved lagoon dewatering and closure plan. After the closure of the lagoons, no further land application of any wastewater is authorized, unless a discharge permit is approved by the MDE.
