Francis P. Kelly (Frostburg)

FROSTBURG — Francis Patrick Kelly “Pat,’’ 90, passed away peacefully at home at 4:30 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2007.

He graduated from Beall High School 1935. During World War II he was operations superintendent for Allegany Ballistics Laboratory with a secret security clearance. He was also assigned to the National Defense Research Counsel.

After the war, he moved to Ohio and became plant manager and vice president of various plastics corporations that in the early 1960’s were the largest manufacturers of plastic pipe in the world. In 1964, he returned to his home of Frostburg to retire, but then began a second career in real estate. For 40 years he operated a successful commercial real estate brokerage and apartment rental business in Western Maryland. Mr. Kelly was also an accomplished golfer spending the winters in Florida for the past 20 years. He routinely played 18 holes of golf, even in his 89th year. His family appreciated his keen sense of humor to the end.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Williams Kelly; his daughter, Diane Kelly Weintraub, a retired successful businesswoman of La Jolla, Calif.; his son, Francis Patrick Kelly Jr., an attorney, and his most beloved daughter-in-law, Barbara Lynne Pettit, a home builder in Montgomery County; his daughter, Katherine Virginia Kelly, of Minneapolis, Minn., a clinical psychologist and educator who is attending her first year of law school, and his grandchildren, Patrick Kelly-Goss, Michael Kelly-Goss, and Molly Kelly-Goss. He will also be missed by many close friends, including Roy Jenkins who helped care for him and his business in his last years, as well as John Glosser; and his special in-laws, Dorothy and Harold Conrad Sr.; nieces Cynthia Mohler, Chris McCulloh, Linda Chaney Raley and Joann Chaney Harman; nephews Michael Kelly, Kevin Kelly, Harold Conrad Jr., Steve Conrad, Thomas Natolly and John C. Williams; and brothers John Delbert Kelly and Bernard Michael Kelly.

There will be a memorial service held at a later date.

Special thanks to the Hospice of Memorial/WMHS and its team members who provided invaluable help during the final days.
