Bird Watchers

Mike Motter of Cumberland, Dhananjaya Katju of Washington and Devi Bhuyan of Harrisonburg, Va., from the left, take part in the 10th annual C&O; Canal mid-winter bird survey on Saturday near Spring Gap. The trio covered a three-mile section of the 184.5-mile canal and spotted birds such as the Eastern bluebird, American goldfinch, tufted titmouse, wide-breasted nuthatch, downy woodpecker, brown creeper and the common raven.

The Audubon Society of the District of Columbia sponsors the event in conjunction with the National Park Service. Volunteers survey the area from Cumberland to Georgetown, including the Potomac River, and the data later is posed on the Web site,
