Happy birthday, West Virginia

Mineral County Commissioner Richard Lechliter, right, and county prosecutor Jay Courrier ring a bell Thursday afternoon on the courthouse steps to mark the 150th anniversary of West Virginia’s statehood. Courrier portrayed Gov. Francis Pierpont and read a proclamation that President Abraham Lincoln declared making West Virginia a state. Similar bell-ringing ceremonies took place across the Mountain State and larger celebrations in Charleston and Wheeling, the state’s first capital city, also got under way.
