6/24 - Six injured at Westernport

Cumberland Times-News

WESTERNPORT — Six people were injured when a pickup truck descended a steep hill and then crashed through an iron rail and over a 15-foot wall at Johnson Street late Monday afternoon, according to the Allegany County Bureau of Police.

The accident occurred at about 4:40 p.m., when the truck operated by Kevin Stewart, 40, of Cumberland, traveled through the rail and over the concrete wall after the brakes of the vehicle apparently failed, police said.

The injured included a 2-year-old child who was seated in the cab of the truck in a car seat, and five adults, including some who were seated in the bed of the truck in lawn chairs. None of the injuries appeared to be of a life-threatening nature.

The crash was observed by a Bureau of Police officer, who rendered aid to the victims prior to the arrival of first-responders.

Bureau of Police Chief J. Robert Dick said, “It was a spectacular crash and we are fortunate the child or any of the adults were not more seriously injured.”

Tri-Towns and McCoole ambulances responded to the scene along with Westernport and Piedmont fire units, according to the Allegany County 911 Joint Communications Division.
