From the ground up

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

Family friend Frank Yantz cuts a large red oak beam that will be used to stabilize a new barn being built for John Helmstetter adjacent to the Great Allegheny Passage off Cash Valley Road. Helmstetter’s old barn, of classic Mid-Atlantic bank design, which burnt to the ground in July, was of particular interest by regional railroad afficionados who used the bright red barn as a scenic backdrop for photography. Family members suspect arson in the blaze that killed a dozen cattle and a working dog. Friends have worked to raise nearly $30,000, the majority coming from benefit rides on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
