Pirolozzi, Grim file for city council seat

CUMBERLAND - Still quite a few people shy of needing to hold a primary election, the city finally has at least two candidates willing to seek election.

Councilwoman Mary Beth Pirolozzi filed early Tuesday morning, with Brian Grim putting in his paperwork later that afternoon.

City Clerk Sharon Clark confirmed the filings.

Pirolozzi, the executive director of the County United Way, was appointed by the mayor and city council to complete the term of Terry Rephann, who resigned in early September to accept a job in Virginia.

Grim, the concession manager at Rocky Gap State Park, was one of 11 candidates city officials interviewed to fill Rephann's seat. He was one of four asked to make a public presentation prior to the council's appointment of Pirolozzi.

The seat currently held by Ed Hedrick also is up, with no indication from him whether or not he intends to file for a third, four-year term.

Those interested in a council seat must be 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, have resided in the city for one year prior to the primary election and be a registered voter.

Also, the filing fee is $25.

Candidate packets are available in the city clerk's office at City Hall weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or online at www.ci.cumberland.md.us.

The deadline to file is Dec. 3. Seven candidates are needed for the city to participate in the Feb. 12 primary.

The general election will be Nov. 4.

Successful candidates will be sworn into office Jan. 5, 2009.
