CUMBERLAND — He was hoping to get a few outdoor weddings and large family reunions, but what Rocky Gap State Park Manager Mike Deckelbaum has attracted to the site’s amphitheater may have a little more bite.

Of the half-dozen events on the roster for this summer, one potential program is a dog show sponsored by a local bar association. The event, titled “Bark in the Park,” may be among the first stage events the amphitheater hosts this summer.

“We’re very open-minded. We’re willing to try just about anything,” Deckelbaum said of the already diverse ideas. “Things are moving in a good direction. I’d like to see it better, but I’m generally pleased.”

Rocky Gap announced last month that the amphitheater would open its 3,000-seat capacity lawn and stage for daily rentals of $250. A $1 fee per person will be added to fee events.

Although the dog show is not a definite, according to organizers, Deckelbaum confirmed a local cheerleading competition will be held at the park.

“If you think about the stage area and the seating it’s just perfect for that,” he said.

Other upcoming events include a wedding and several small concerts. So far the amphitheater’s first event is booked for June 17.

“We’re making wonderful progress and we’re very encouraged by the interest shown. We’re hoping for things to grow and expand even further,” Deckelbaum said. “We’re thrilled to have the public utilize the site this summer.”
