Tri-State edges Oakland in 2-1 battles for sweep

Titans repeat; will play in Maryland state tournament

POTOMAC PARK — Zach Braithwaite’s one-out single in the bottom of the seventh knocked home Jacob Foreman with the tying run and Bryce Nightengale with the winning run as the Tri-State Titans repeated as Pen-Mar WV League champions with a pair of 2-1 victories over Oakland on Sunday at Hamilton Field.
The walk-off win gave the Titans a sweep of the best-of-three series, a 26-2 record and a berth in the Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball State Tournament.
The state tournament invites the champions of eight Maryland summer leagues to a single-elimination tournament to determine a state champion. This year the state tournament will be played at the Hammersmith Hot Stove Complex at the Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 24. The rain date is Aug. 25.
Sunday’s second game, a pitchers’ duel between Oakland’s Bryan Lenhart and Tri-State’s Cody Ellsworth, was scoreless through six innings.
Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh. Cody Toothman singled, Cody Humberson singled and Cam King walked to load the bases. Jason Ashby drove in Toothman with a one-out walk, but Ellsworth got out of further trouble with a pair of fly outs to end the inning.
Tri-State won it with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Foreman led off with a single and Nightengale reached when his sacrifice bunt attempt ended up being an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt by Drew O’Neal, pinch-hitter Brian Powell walked to load the bases.
Braithwaite then singled through the left side, the ball deflecting off a diving shortstop and into left field.
Ellsworth allowed only four singles, one run, walked four and struck out nine for the win. Sean Collette doubled and Foreman had two singles for Tri-State.
Bryan Lenhart absorbed a tough loss for Oakland, allowing five hits and no earned runs in 6 1-3 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
