Oakland’s Reams wins Pen-Mar WV League Triple Crown

CUMBERLAND — Oakland’s Tommie Reams won the Triple Crown and Tri-State rode its dominating pitching staff to win the regular-season championship in the playoffs in this year’s Pen-Mar WV Baseball League.

The playoffs begin Saturday with the first games of the best-of-three semifinals. Tri-State (22-2) plays West Virginia (0-24) at Berkeley Springs, while Oakland (16-8) visits Cumberland (10-14) at Bel Air in one nine-inning game at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the sites are reversed for games two, and three if necessary, with the same 1 o’clock start.

The semifinal winners advance to a best-of-three championship series Aug. 10-11.

Reams pulled off the rare Triple Crown by leading the league in hitting with a .492 average and runs batted in with 25, and sharing the league lead in home runs with teammate Bryan Lenhart with three.

Tri-State’s pitching staff had an earned run average of just 1.29, with 163 strikeouts in 157 innings. Three Titans had ERAs under 1.00 — Jacob Foreman, 0.77; Cody Ellsworth, 0.93; and Brian Powell, 0.94.

Ellsworth led the league with seven wins and 49 strikeouts. Oakland led the league in team batting average at .322. Final standings and statistics are listed in today’s Scoreboard page.
