Dorsey, Maiers arms dominate Elkins in sweep for 22-5 Romney

— ELKINS, W.Va. — Colton Dorsey and Matt Maiers provided Romney Post 91 with outstanding pitching performances Saturday during a doubleheader it swept from Elkins in American Legion action.

Dorsey gave up two singles and had no walks during a 2-0 shutout win in the early game, and Maiers did his best to match him by allowing six hits and getting three strikeouts as Romney finished the afternoon with a 9-0 victory.

Now 22-5, Romney plays another doubleheader today at Buckhannon.

Hunter Jenkins drove in one run with a single and Cole Smith scored Dane Heavener for the second run as Romney could scrap together only four hits of its own.

Romney’s offense was a bit sharper the second time out, scoring four runs in the second to help it build a 6-0 lead after three innings.

Smith went 3 for 4 with a double and one RBI, and Jamison Jones hit a double and a single to drive in two. Shane Ennis had two singles and an RBI, and Tyler Conley drove in one run with a single. David Delawder had a double and two RBIs, and Josh Bane singled home a run.

Fort Cumberland, Morgantown split


CUMBERLAND — Austin Bittner brought Adam Duvall home on a grounder to the shortstop in the bottom of the ninth to send Fort Cumberland Post 13 Junior Legion to a 7-6 win in the first half of a doubleheader with Morgantown Saturday at Allegany College of Maryland.

Morgantown regained itself in the finale to win 14-4 and force a split.

Post 13 took a 6-3 lead into the top of the seventh inning, but Post 2 tied the score and forced extra innings. Duvall started the ninth with a single, was sacrificed over to second and stole third. He scored when Bittner bounced a ball to short.

Blake Milburn, Jack Hawkins and Garrett Kesner all finished with three singles. Dylan Wilson hit a double.

For Morgantown, Eric Stariper had three singles while Sampson Cropper hit a double and a single.

Post 2 scored seven times in the sixth inning of the late game to break open a 5-2 score. Tyler Hart led the way with three singles and a double, and Jordan Deffinbaugh added a triple and a single.

Fort Cumberland (18-18) got three singles from Wilson, two from Brady Hillegas and a triple from Milburn. Hawkins added a double.

Post 13 will play again this afternoon when it takes on Chaney and Gaithersburg in Walkersville beginning at 3:30.
