Romney rallies for split of twinbill

— ROMNEY, W.Va. — Shane Ennis went 3 for 4 and Romney Post 91 roared back from five runs down to beat Jefferson 11-7 in the first game of an American Legion baseball doubleheader Tuesday night at Hampshire.

Jefferson won the second game 3-1.

Romney trailed 7-2 after two innings in the opener, then outscored Jefferson 9-0 the rest of the way, taking the lead for the first time during a four-run fifth.

Cole Smith had two singles and winning pitcher Josh Crawford and David Delawder doubled.

In the nitecap, Romney was held to six hits, with Ethan Turner and John Judy getting two each. Cody Kesner struck out seven in a complete-game effort.

On Monday night at Hampshire, Romney edged Berkeley 5-4 in 12 innings.

Berkeley took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the ninth, but  Romney tied it in the bottom of the inning when Tyler Holt reached on an error and pinch-runner Kesner scored on a double by Delawder.

In the 12th, Delawder led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Smith. After a fly out, Delawder scored on a two-out, walk-off single by Ennis.

Ennis, who struck out five in three scoreless relief innings for the win, had three singles, Hunter Jenkins doubled and singled and Matt Maiers singled twice for Romney. Garrett Crawford allowed three runs over the first eight innings.

Romney split a pair with Sykesville (Md.) on Sunday, losing 11-9 and winning 8-5.

Scott Hessler had three hits, Delawder and Turner two and Curtis Young a double in the first game. Jenkins went 3 for 3 with a double, Ennis and Crawford had two singles and Taylor Kesner a double in the second-game win. Delawder earned a complete-game win and struck out five.

Romney (12-5) plays Morgantown on Saturday at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at West Virginia University.
