Grantsville splits two nail-biters with Bridgeport

— BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Grantsville and Bridgeport split an epic doubleheader with Bridgeport using a walk off home run to win the opener and Post 214 striking back in extra innings in the nitecap in American Legion action on Saturday.

Greg Smith hit a two-run game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Bridgeport a 3-2 win in the first half, while Grantsville finished the day by scoring four times in the top of the 11th for a 9-5 win.

In the early outing, Bridgeport trailed 2-1 from the third inning until Smith homered in the seventh. It had a total of six hits, with Joseph Doddrill adding an RBI single in the second inning.

Mason Dick had a single and an RBI for Grantsville.

Post 214 let two chances slip away before finally converting on the third try to force the split. It led 4-1 before Bridgeport scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, and was up 5-4 before Bridgeport tied the score in the bottom of the ninth.

Grantsville finally broke through with four runs in the 11th on the back of a two-run single from Seth Holler, and held Bridgeport scoreless in the home half to preserve the victory.

Holler wound up with three hits, while Cody Rodeheaver had two doubles and two singles. Kyle Rosenberger and Pat Sines had three hits apiece. Rosenberger had two doubles and Sines one. Brooks Carr hit two doubles and knocked in two runs.

Sines struck out seven by pitching nine-plus innings, though he didn’t factor into the decision.

Grantsville (7-7) plays at Preston tonight at 6:30 p.m. in a make-up game.
