HANCOCK — Hunter McKinley tossed a five-hit shutout to lead Hancock to a 2-0 victory over Southern in the first round of the Class 1A West Section baseball playoffs on Friday.
McKinley scattered five singles, struck out six and walked two to get the win.
The only runs of the day came in the bottom of the fourth. McKinley singled and scored on a single by Nate Souders. Chad Shipe, who had also singled in the inning, scored the other run on a passed ball.
Scott Cooper absorbed a tough loss for the Rams, allowing only five hits and one earned run while striking out seven and walking one.
Shawn Shahan singled twice for Southern (4-15).
Fourth-seeded Hancock (10-8) plays at top-seeded Allegany today in the sectional semifinals at 4 p.m.
