Mountain Maryland Classic this weekend

20 games to be played on five fields the first three days, semi’s and championships on Sunday

— CUMBERLAND — A total of 22 teams and hundreds of players will descend upon Western Maryland this weekend to celebrate America’s birthday with four days of its pastime as the third Mountain Maryland Classic of the American Junior Legion baseball begins Thursday at five area fields.

Beginning Thursday morning, teams will play at least five games each with a champion being crowned on Sunday. All 24 teams will play a round robin format Thursday, Friday and Saturday, before the semifinals and championship are played on Sunday.

The classic is sponsored by the Potomac Valley and Fort Cumberland Junior Legion teams.

Games will start each day at 10 a.m, and for the first three days of the tournament a total of four games will be played every day at each of the five fields in use. The fourth and final game on each of the first three days will begin at approximately 5 p.m. Sunday’s schedule has the two semifinal games beginning at 10 a.m., and the championship and consolation games going at 1 p.m.

The classic is broken down into four divisions of five or six teams. Each team will play every other team in their division once during the round robin portion before the teams with the best record in each division moves on to the semifinal round.

Division A consists of Hampshire (W.Va.) Post 91, Williamsport, St. Mary’s, Damascus and Bell Impact.

Division B is made up of the Frederick Rangers, Mount Airy, Brunswick, MVB Bridgeport and Winchester (Va.).

Division C has South Central (Pa.), Berkeley Post (W.Va.), Chaney, Morgantown (W.Va.), Jefferson (W.Va) and Potomac Valley (W.Va.).

Division D is filled by Fort Cumberland, Blue Ridge (Va.), Cecil, Frostburg Farrady, Frederick and Woodsboro.

The five fields that will be used for the classic are Holler, Hamilton and Memorial fields at the Hot Stove Complex; Cumberland Legion Field; and the field at Frostburg State University.
