Romney defeats Grantsville in Elkins

— ELKINS, W.Va. — Garrett Crawford hit three singles and knocked in a run and Braiden Popluhar scattered six hits in a complete-game win to send Romney Post 91 to a 7-1 win over Grantsville Post 214 in the Hillbilly Hardball Classic Thursday night at Davis & Elkins College.

Shane Ennis hit two singles and Scott Hessler had a two-out, two-run single that helped break the game open in the fifth inning.

Keith Chapman belted a pair of doubles and Austin Graham had two singles for Grantsville.

Grantsville trailed the West Virginia Power 7-2 in the fifth inning when last night’s game was interrupted by thunderstorms. Grantsville was also scheduled to play Preston later Friday night.

Today, Grantsville plays Licking County, Ohio, at 2:30 and Fairmont Post 17 at 5:30 at Davis & Elkins.

CUMBERLAND — Colton Sivic had four hits to lead an 18-hit attack that carried Fort Cumberland past Grantsville in a Mountain District game at Legion Field.

Sivic had two doubles, two singles and an RBI, while Blake Hillegas, Josh Delaney and Adam DuVall each hit three singles. Brandon Markwood and Brandon Stotler had RBI singles.

Brooks Carr drove in all four Grantsville runs with a three-run homer in the seventh and an RBI single in the eighth, which cut the Fort Cumberland lead to 6-4 at the time. Post 13 scored four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Keith Chapman added two singles for Grantsville.

ELKINS, W.Va. — Romney rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and squeezed past the West Virginia Power in the Hillbilly Hardball Classic Friday at Bluegrass Field.

Matt Maiers singled and scored the tying run on a squeeze bunt by Scotty Hessler in the seventh, and later in the inning Garrett Crawford singled and scored on a squeeze bunt by Tyler Holt to end the game.

Braiden Popluhar went 3 for 4 with a double, two singles and an RBI and Maiers had two singles for Romney (6-2), which won despite being outhit 11-7.

Romney plays again today, at Davis & Elkins College at noon, against Preston Post 56.

ELKINS, W.Va. — James Baldwin hit a double and two singles and Gage Hanna had one double and one single as Fairmont beat Romney in a Hillbilly Hardball slugfest at Davis & Elkins College.

Both teams had 18 hits. They also combined for nine errors, with Romney having five.

David Delawder had three singles and two RBIs, Shane Ennis two singles and an RBI and Garrett Crawford two singles for Romney.
