ACM loses Classic opener

CUMBERLAND — Salkehatchie struggled to find its stroke from the foul line for the first 38 minutes, but converted 7 of its last 9 over the final two minutes to stay ahead of Allegany and win 90-80 in the Allegany College of Maryland Christmas Classic Friday at Bob Kirk Arena.

The Indians received a 24-point night from Jimmy Givens and 16 more from Chris King. Denzel Collins finished the night with 15 points to help his team to a 14-point halftime lead and a 21-point advantage with over 12 minutes left.

Allegany received identical lines from Tyson Reynold and Davon Williams — five field goals and 13 for 16 at the foul line for 23 points. They almost matched each other in rebounding as Reynold came away with 15 and Williams grabbed 13. Alson Reynold contributed nine points and Mark Robinson added eight. Reynold scored all of his points on three-pointers, and they all came during a four-minute stretch in the second half when the Trojans closed the score from 21 points down to 10.

Today’s finish to the Christmas Tournament has been canceled due to the threat of a winter storm and Allegany finishes the first part of its season 2-9. The Trojans are off until January 4 when they play at Baltimore City.

Salkehatchie is now 8-2, with one of those victories coming against then No. 1 University of Central Florida.

Southern Maryland    83

Garrett     81

MCHENRY — Garrett College dropped to 7-3 on the season with a hard loss to Southern Maryland Friday on the Lakers’ floor.

Holloway had help from DeAndre Davis as Davis had 18 points.

Holloway and Davis both had double doubles with Holloway having 13 rebounds and Davis 12.

Garrett had 48 rebounds on the glass against Southern.

“We did everything right but win the game,” said Garrett coach Dennis Ginson said.

Garrett committed 25 turnovers while giving up 53 points in the second half.

Garrett, which led 43-33 at halftime, gave up a three-point lead with a minute left in the game and Southern scored on a three-point play.
