— CUMBERLAND — Martin Geben powered his way to 23 points and Toby Christensen was red-hot from the perimeter, hitting five three-point goals to lead St. Maria Goretti of the Baltimore Catholic League to a 62-51 win over Allegany in the first round of the Bill Bowers Christmas Tournament Friday at Allegany.

The 6-foot-9 Geben, who has committed to Notre Dame, hit eight field goals, with most coming from the paint, and knocked down 4 out of 6 free throws to arrive at his 23 points.

“He’s big and strong,” Allegany head coach Tedd Eirich said of Geben. “It got to the point where he couldn’t be stopped. He went inside maybe four straight times, drop-stepped and dunked. He was just a beast.”

The 6-6 Christensen hit seven field goals, five of them three pointers, to finish with 19 points for the Gaels, while Donte Doleman scored 10 points.

Allegany was led by Trenton Eirich with 14 points and four assists. Darquel Jessie scored 10 points and had six rebounds, while Mario D’Atri scored nine points, with Colton Sivic and Bryce Nightengale both scoring eight, with Nightengale coming up with four steals.

Goretti led 12-10 after the first quarter and stretched its lead to 11 points in the second before the Campers made a run to cut it to three, 31-28, at the half. Goretti maintained to hold a four-point lead, 47-43, entering the fourth, with Alco hovering anywhere from two to three back inside 3:00 before the Gaels went inside to pull away.

“They just wore us out,” said Eirich. “They got to the line and started making foul shots.”

Goretti was 15 for 22 from the line, while Allegany was 7 for 9 for the game.

Allegany (4-1) will play Bishop Walsh at 4 p.m. in today’s second round, following the Fort Hill-Goretti game, which tips off at 2:30 p.m.
