BW drops pair

HAGERSTOWN — Defending area co-champion Bishop Walsh dropped a pair of games over the weekend at the Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament in Hagerstown.

The Spartans started the weekend with a 79-30 loss to host St. Maria Goretti on Friday and lost to St. Paul’s, 83-37, on Saturday. Bishop Walsh (0-2) will go for its first win on Tuesday when it plays at Calvary Christian at 7:30.

St. Paul’s Blake Brown made six threes for 18 points in Saturday’s game. Iba Camara added 13 points and Tre Hamer and Alexander Matsinye 10.

Bishop Walsh, which returns just one starter from last season, was paced by Isaac Mourier with 10 points.

The Spartans trailed 48-19 at halftime.

On Friday, BW found itself on the wrong end of a 30-2 score at the end of the first quarter and trailed 51-10 at halftime. The Spartans’ defense tightened in the second half, but the first-half hole was too deep to overcome.

Dante Coleman and Isaac Harris-Winn led the Gaels with 11 points, and Donovan Walker added 10 more. Martin Geben, a 6-foot-9 forward committed to Notre Dame, and Ammicka Akayci had nine points.

Mourier had a team-high 13 points for the Spartans.

Bishop Walsh won the tournament last season by beating Goretti and St. Mary’s Ryken.
