Holloway’s 25 helps Garrett get past Allegany, 65-61

— CUMBERLAND — Frank Holloway scored 25 points, Corey Groom hit a tie-breaking free throw and the Garrett Lakers went on to defeat Allegany College, 65-61, in Maryland JUCO men’s basketball Monday night at Bob Kirk Arena.

Holloway made nine field goals and 6 of 9 free throws to lead all scorers. Groom finished with 10 points, Chris Scarlett and Marquise Green had nine and Yannick Zanfack eight for the Lakers (12-6, 6-4 JUCO)

Allson Reynolds hit four three-point goals and had 16 points, Davon Williams had 16 points and nine rebounds and Garrett D’Atri 12 points for Allegany (5-15, 3-8). Tyson Reynold added 10 points and 10 rebounds and Alonzo Molina had six rebounds and three blocked shots.

Garrett trailed 28-25 at halftime, but led 53-50 late in the second half when Molina dove into the stands in front of the AC bench to save a ball. The pass to Allson Reynold, who hit his fourth three-point goal of the night to tie it 53-53.

Again the Lakers went up by three, but Garrett D’Atri hit a three-pointer to tie it 56-56.

Garrett sealed it with a 9-2 spurt. Groom was fouled after an inbounds play and hit one of two foul shots to put the Lakers on top for good at 57-56. Garrett extended its lead to 65-58 until the Trojans made another three-point shot in the final seconds.

Allegany plays at Prince Georges on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Garrett plays at Cecil on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
