YOUNGWOOD, Pa. — Frank Holloway scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds and D.J. Ritchie added 10 points and four steals as Garrett College overcame a poor shooting night to defeat Westmoreland County 56-44 in junior college men’s basketball Wednesday night.
Corey Groom had 10 points and five assists and several big plays in the final minutes to help the Lakers (3-1) pull away a bit. Chris Scarlett added a spark off the bench, had six points, and helped the Lakers boost their lead to double figures in the final two minutes. Shannon McCready had seven points and two blocked shots.
“It was a very physical game, and we were unable to pull away mainly because we shot so poorly,’’ said Garrett coach Dennis Gibson, whose team was 17 of 68 from the field. “We just had no offensive rhythm. But we found a way to win, and that’s the biggest thing. Once we got the lead to 10 with about two minutes left, they tried to trap us but we were able to break it and got some easy shots.”
Zachary Smith had a game high 16 points for Westmoreland (0-1).
Garrett will play again Monday at Butler at 6 p.m.
Potomac State 91
Southern Maryland 87
