Trojans trip up Cats

CUMBERLAND — Madi Nightengale poured in 27 points and Allegany College put together a strong all-around game in defeating Potomac State, 69-59, in junior college women’s basketball Monday night at Bob Kirk Arena.

Nightengale hit nine field goals, with three being three-pointers, and six of eight free throws.

Four Trojan scorers reached double figures, as Derica Souder, who also made three three-point shots, had 14 points, Monique Rhodes 13 and Christina Briscoe 10. Paris Duncan had a big night with 14 rebounds.

Jenna McAtee made four three-point goals and led Potomac State with 24 points.

“Madi capitalized on some sets we ran to free her up and also did a good job defensively creating some turnovers,’’ said ACM coach Bethany Sindy. “She guarded (Jenna McAtee) in the second half and did a good job.”

McAtee made all four of her three-point goals in the first half.

“We played team ball and I’m proud of how the girls played defense and made good decisions with the basketball, especially late in the game against their press. Paris Duncan was a monster on the boards. She extended many plays on the offensive end and did not allow many second-chance opportunities for them on the defensive end.”

Allegany led 35-29 at halftime. Souder hit several big shots in transition during the second half to help the Trojans stay on top.

Allegany (2-13) plays at Frederick and Potomac State (1-11) hosts Butler County on Saturday.
