Garrett drops Hagerstown

McHENRY — Amber Smith scored 22 points and collected nine rebounds to lead sixth-seeded Garrett over 11th-seeded Hagerstown Community College, 69-48, in the first round of the Maryland JUCO women’s basketball tournament Tuesday night at Garrett.

Smith hit eight field goals, two of them three-pointers, to lead the Lady Lakers, while Ayana Vaughn scored 16 points, Kristyn Wilson 15 and Anamaria Skaro 11.

Garrett led at the half, 38-20.

Hagerstown was led by Olivia Turner with 20 points and Bianca Brown with 10.

Garrett (16-7) is scheduled to play in Thursday’s second round at Prince George’s Community College against a team to be determined.

BALTIMORE — Allegany College of Maryland’s season came to a close Tuesday night as the Lady Trojans fell to Baltimore City Community College in the first round of the Maryland JUCO women’s basketball tournament at Baltimore City.

Fifth-seeded Baltimore, which led 32-14 at the half, was led by Jamia Lawson with 16 points and Shamera O’Neal with 12.

Twelfth-seeded Allegany (5-19) was led by Gina Rievel with 12 points and Courtney Landis with 11.

Westmoreland    59

YOUNGWOOD, Pa. — Leah Hershberger helped Potomac State College defeat Westmoreland Community College Tuesday evening at Westmoreland to capture the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championship.

Hershberger scored a team-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Potomac State (19-4, 8-0 Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference) held a 35-29 halftime lead over the Wolfpack, although they did trail for a brief period in the second half. The Catamounts never trailed by more than three points at any time in the game, however. Chelsea Keyser scored eight points and had six rebounds.

Westmoreland was led by Shalia Williams’ 17 points.

Potomac State will play Saturday at home against Northern Virgina Community College beginning at 1 p.m.
