CUMBERLAND — Ayana Vaughn scored 27 points, Anamaria Skaro had 20 and Amber Smith 19 to power Garrett College to an 85-66 Maryland JUCO women’s basketball win over Allegany College Monday at Bob Kirk Arena.
Vaughn hit nine field goals and 6 of 7 free throws to lead all scorers for the Lakers (12-6, 5-4 JUCO), who have won six of their last eight.
Skaro hit seven field goals and 6 of 9 foul shots, and Smith made seven baskets and 4 of 6 free throws for Garrett, which led only 37-33 at halftime but outscored Allegany 48-33 in the second half. Kristyn Wilson added 11 points.
Gina Rievel had 19 points and India Plunkett posted a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Trojans (3-16, 1-8).
Both teams play again on Wednesday. Garrett will be at Cecil at 5 p.m. while Allegany travels to Prince George’s for an 8 o’clock game.
Frederick 72, Potomac State 69
FREDERICK — K.D. Morgan sank a 3-pointer with less than a second remaining to give the Frederick Community College Cougars a 72-69 win over the Potomac State College Catamounts Monday evening.
Leading 69-65 with 2:00 remaining, PSC committed a turnover and missed a contested layup that allowed FCC to tied the game, 69-69, after scoring on each Catamount miscue. With 0.8 seconds on the clock, Morgan connected on a three that ended up being the difference.
Potomac State lead at the half 32-27 in a game that was tight throughout - neither time was able to gain an advantage on the scoreboard greater than five points.
Morgan was Frederick Community College’s leading scoring with with 24 points and Destinee Jernigan added 23 points in the victory. FCC (13-7) has won six of their last seven games.
Freshman Leah Hershberger led the way for the Cats with 13 points and three assists. A balanced Catamounts attack also included nine points and nine rebounds from Jenna McAtee. Kirsten Rayner contributed eight points and five rebounds.
With the loss, Potomac State (13-4) drops their second straight game and will host Butler Wednesday at 5 p.m.
