ACM beats HCC by 1

HAGERSTOWN — An Allegany graduate scored the winning points and a Fort Hill alum intercepted a desperate inbounds pass as Allegany College of Maryland leaned on its local players to halt a losing streak by beating Hagerstown 62-61 Wednesday in Maryland JUCO Conference action.

The Trojans trailed most of the evening until the final five seconds when freshman Courtney Landis, a former Camper, came up with a steal and was fouled. With her team down 61-60, Landis calmly sank both of her free throws to put the Trojans ahead 62-61 with 4.7 seconds left.

The Hawks still had time to inbound the ball and attempt a game-winner, but former Sentinel Kayla Hutson cut off the pass and sealed the win.

Both Hutson and Landis were active in the Trojans offense as Hutson put up 13 points and Landis added 11. Gina Rievel scored a game-high 25 points on six field goals and a 10 for 12 performance at the free-throw line.

Hagerstown was led by Bianca Brown’s 20 points. Olivia Turner added 13.

The win is the first for Allegany since a 77-65 win over Cecil College on Dec. 11, breaking a skid that reached 12 games.

Allegany (4-18, 2-10 MDJUCO) plays a non-conference game with Anne Arundel on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. The Hawks are 11-12 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
