Spartans sink Southern

— OAKLAND — Bishop Walsh turned a four-point lead at the close of the first quarter into a 27-16 lead by halftime as the Spartans drifted to a 48-32 win over Southern Thursday in Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Hunter Marrale paced all scorers with 17 points. Liam Rhodes was the Spartans’ second-leading scorer with seven points.

The Rams hung close in the first quarter as Bishop Walsh built a 12-8 lead. The Spartans created some separation by the end of the first half to lead 27-16 at the break. Bishop Walsh led 33-22 after three quarters. Southern was led by Alex Fike’s 10 points. Brian Wildman added seven.

Logan Cvetnick scored 21 points in Southern’s 58-38 junior varsity win. Brian Reams gave the Rams 11 points and 10 rebounds. Isaiah Frasor and Darius Berry had 10 points each for Bishop Walsh.

The Spartans (19-7, 12-2) plays host to Keyser on Thursday. Southern finishes at 8-14 and 7-9 in the AMAC. The Rams will play Tuesday at Northern in the first round of the Maryland 1A West Sectional playoffs.

Shalom 43, Calvary Christian 31

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Jeff McCracken scored a game-high 19 points as fourth-seeded Shalom beat fifth-seeded Calvary Christian in the opening round of the Mason-Dixon Conference Tournament.

McCracken hit five field goals and converted 9 of 12 foul shots for Shalom, who struck quickly and led 18-2 after the first quarter. It was 22-4 at halftime.

Matt Dillow had 10 points for Calvary (10-14), which had split a pair of regular-season games with Shalom.

The Eagles will host a first-round game of the Maryland Christian Schools Tournament on Monday at 7 p.m.
