Alco, Rams earn top seedings in 1A

Mtn. Ridge girls No. 2 in 2A playoffs

CUMBERLAND  — The Allegany boys and Southern girls basketball teams were rewarded for their successful regular seasons by earning the No. 1 seed in the Maryland 1A West Sectional playoffs during the playoff draw held by the Maryland Public Secondary School Association Sunday.

Fort Hill earned the second -seed in both boys  and girls   and the Allegany girls enter as the fourth-seed. Northern was seeded fourth in each the boys and the girls bracket, and the Southern boys got the No. 5 seed.

In Class 2A, the Mountain Ridge girls were seeded second and the boys listed seventh.

The 1A sectional playoffs, which begin locally on Friday with the fifth-seeded Southern Rams playing at (4) Northern in the opening round of the boys bracket, don’t hit their full stride until next week when the boys hold their section semifinals on Monday and the section finals on Wednesday.

Monday’s semifinals pits the Southern/Northern winner at top-seeded Allegany and (3) Hancock at Fort Hill. The semifinal winners will play Wednesday at the higher seed in the section finals, and the winner of that advances to play the East Section winner for the West Region championship on either Friday or Saturday.

The girls playoffs begin Saturday when (4) Northern hosts (5) Hancock in the quarterfinals. The winner there advances to play at Southern on Tuesday in one semifinal, while Allegany visits Fort Hill in the other.

The section final will be played Thursday and the region championship on Saturday.

The 2A sectionals begin Saturday when the Lady Miners face (7) Catoctin. The semifinals would then be played on Tuesday and the finals on Thursday. The West Region championship would be played Saturday.

The Miners boys team starts the playoffs at (2)_ Williamsport on Friday in the quarterfinals. If they win, they would advance to play in the semifinals on Monday finals on Wednesday and the Region championship on Friday.
