McHENRY — Southern Garrett graduate D.J. Ritchie and Shannon McCready both scored 15 points to lead six Garrett players in double figures as the Lakers opened their season with an efficient and convincing 106-42 win over CCAC Boyce Tuesday night at Garrett.
Ritchie hit six field goals, three of them three-pointers, as the Lakers dropped in 12 three-pointers. The Lakers also dominated on the glass, outrebounding Boyce, 59-17, with Frank Holloway leading the way with 14 rebounds.
Corey Groom and Holloway both scored 14 points for Garrett. Yannick Zanfack scored 12 and Marquise Green 10. Groom and Green both had four steals as Garrett had 14 on and finished with 25 assists, with Groom handing out seven.
“Obviously, it’s a good opening game for us,” said Garrett head coach Dennis Gibson. “We haven’t played particularly well up to this point in our scrimmages, but tonight we actually executed. The 25 assists really makes me happy. It’s a sign that we’re not just dribbling.
“As for Ritchie, he is playing unbelievably. He’s being a leader and shot well for us. He’s been showing he’s a tough local kid who can play at a high level for us. I feel we’re only going to get better. We have a lot of young kids, and some more haven’t played a lot because of injuries. But I see great potential for this team.”
Hairston scored 13 points for Boyce.
Garrett (1-0) will host the McDonald’s Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Lakers play Lord Fairfax at 8 p.m. Friday.
