Mountain Ridge wins Rogers JV tournament

FROSTBURG — Mountain Ridge doubled up Frankfort 62-31 Thursday afternoon at home to win the championship of the Eddie Rogers Memorial Junior Varsity Tournament.

Dylan Shimko earned Most Valuable Player honors by scoring 13 points for the Miners in their 31-point win. The Falcons were led by Tanner Oaks with eight points, which earned him a spot on the all-tournament team.

Mountain Ridge’s Lucas Lowery and Dylan Williams joined Shimko in being honored as members of the all-tourney team.

In the consolation game, Trent Rider scored 14 points as Southern Fulton edged Hampshire 44-43. John Judy led Hampshire with 13 points.

Rider made his way on the all-tournament team with the performance as did the Trojans’ Tyler Andes.

In Monday’s opening round, Frankfort snuck past Southern Fulton 47-45 and the Miners beat Hampshire 55-29.

The Eddie Rogers Tournament is named after a former Westmar junior varsity basketball player killed in a train accident in 2000. All proceeds from the tournament fund a scholarship in his name.

 

Southern wins on Fazenbaker’s buzzer-beater

FROSTBURG  — Most Valuable Player Tyler Fazenbaker sank a three-pointer as time expired to lift Southern to a 46-43 win over Frankfort in the finals of the Freshman Tournament at Mountain Ridge High School.

Fazenbaker scored a total of 13 points in the Rams’ win, while Frankfort’s Jake Young matched him in the loss.

Fort Hill bested Mountain Ridge 65-50 on Ethan York’s 22-point performance. Justin Halbritter gave his Miners 15 points.

Besides Fazenbaker’s MVP, Southern also had Will Fredlock named to the all-tournament team. Frankfort's Young and Devin Alt were also named, along with Tyler Malone of Mountain Ridge and Fort Hill’s York.

The first round was played Monday with Southern beating Mountain Ridge 47-44 and Frankfort beating Mountain Ridge 39-34.
