Mountain Ridge routs Southern

Johnson, Markwood combine for 48 in 81-72 win

FROSTBURG — Rashawn Johnson and Brandon Markwood combined to score 48 points in leading Mountain Ridge over Southern 81-72 Thursday evening in the Maryland Class 1A West Section semfinal playoff at Mountain Ridge High School.

The second-seeded Miners will play top-seed Allegany Tuesday at Campobello beginning at 7 p.m.

Johnson finished with a game-high 26 points on eight field goals and 10 of 11 from the free-throw line. Markwood made three baskets, including two three pointers, and sank 14 of 16 from the foul line. Steven Glasbrenner added 19 points, making three threes out of his seven baskets and two free throws.

Three players scored in double figures for sixth-seeded Southern, which finished its season 9-15. Lucas Ritchie led the Rams with 21 points, making two threes out of his five buckets and nine of 10 from the foul line. Clay Todd added 15 points and Brian Wildman had 13.

Mountain Ridge (12-10) never trailed at the breaks, leading 26-14, 42-26 at halftime and 61-39 going into the final quarter where Southern outscored the Miners 33-20.

The Miners converted 32 of 42 free throws while the Rams made 16 of 22.
