CUMBERLAND — Dalton Gaus hit a three-point shot in the closing seconds and finished with 18 points as second-ranked Fort Hill survived a scare from Bishop Walsh, winning the final City League game of the season, 46-44, Friday night at Bishop Walsh.
The Spartans took a 44-43 lead on a bucket by Billy Taylor with 17 seconds to go. On the ensuing Fort Hill possession, Brandon Reed, along the baseline, found Gaus open at the top of the key, and Gaus buried the shot to make it 46-44 with eight seconds left.
Bishop Walsh got off a long, final shot that missed the mark as time expired.
Tyler Michael added 13 points for Fort Hill (16-5, 2-2 City, 9-3 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference), which led 26-19 at halftime.
Darius Berry and Kier Turner had double-doubles for Bishop Walsh (8-15, 0-4, 5-7), Berry getting 12 points and 11 rebounds and Turner finishing with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Max Paver had a strong all-around game with eight points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists, and Isaac Maurier grabbed seven rebounds for the Spartans, who led 37-36 going into the fourth quarter.
Fort Hill, 8-1 in its last nine games, ends the regular season Wednesday with a home game against University. BW will host Frankfort Tuesday night.
Fort Hill won the jayvee game 54-28. D.J. Powell had 15 points for the Sentinels and Ryan Dunn led the Spartans with 11.
