SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Colton Dorsey scored eight points in the first quarter, while his foul shooting prevented Keyser from rallying in the fourth as Frankfort won the West Virginia Class AA Region II, Section 1 championship 56-38 Thursday at Frankfort.
Both teams advance to the Region II finals next week against either Bridgeport or Robert C. Byrd, whom play each other Saturday. Frankfort will play the loser at home, 7 p.m., on Wednesday. Keyser travels to play the winner, also at 7 o’clock on Wednesday.
Dorsey’s first quarter, consisting of both of his three-pointers and one two-point bucket, helped Frankfort take a 13-9 lead. Keyser stayed close in the second quarter as the score at halftime was 25-23. The Falcons (10-14) began to create some space during the third quarter and continued to pull away from the 40-31 lead they had going into the fourth.
Dorsey finished 5 of 8 at the foul line and finished with 19 points to lead all players. As a team, the Falcons shot 20-for-31 on free throws to hold off Keyser from getting any closer.
Gage Shaffer gave the Falcons 10 rebounds and seven points, and Thane Cutter added nine points with seven rebounds. Nick Smith pitched in with eight points.
“It’s a pretty big win for us because it’s the first time that I remember that we’ve ever beaten Keyser three times in one year,” said Frankfort’s head coach Scott Slider. “We didn’t get a chance to play them three times when Keyser was Class AAA, so we haven’t had the chance to play them more than twice for all that long a time, but it’s always special when you can beat your rival. Especially in the playoffs.”
Keyser’s Jordan Bailey led the Golden Tornado (4-18) with seven points.
