Mount Aloysius pulls away from FSU

CRESSON, Pa. — Mount Aloysius used a late first-half surge to take the lead for good and extended it throughout the second half in defeating Frostburg State 65-56 Wednesday night.

Lindsey Sammarco had a game-high 24 points and Becky Bard 16 for Mount Aloysius (11-7).

Elaina Hummel was perfect in eight trips to the foul line and led Frostburg (5-13) with 14 points. Stephanie Straka had 11 points, Ronje James 10, three assists and three steals, and Brionna Hall six points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats, who were plagued by 29 turnovers.

The Bobcats built a 19-12 lead midway through the first half, but the Mounties ended the half on an 18-6 run for a 30-25 advantage. Mount Aloysius scored the first nine points of the second half and led by as many as 22 points, 63-41, with 2:35 remaining.

FSU will host Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Howard 60, Allegany 53

COLUMBIA — In the end it was turnovers and rebounding that did in Allegany College of Maryland during a loss to Howard Wednesday in Maryland JUCO womens’ basketball.

The Trojans committed 35 turnovers, couldn’t come up with a defensive rebound down the stretch and shot 34 percent from the floor to fall to 1-8 in the MD JUCO and 2-15 overall.

Madi Nightengale led ACM with 17 points, followed by Derica Souder’s 14 points and Monique Rhodes’ 11. Paris Duncan had a team-high 15 rebounds to go with seven points.

The Trojans shot 17-for-50 from the field (34 percent) and 17-for-27 at the foul line.

For the Dragons, Kara Hight scored 13 points and Dalbon Pinkney added 10.

Allegany trailed 24-23 at halftime and went on a 5-0 run in the second half to pull up right next to Howard. The Trojans, however, couldn’t maintain the offense and their defense fell apart at critical times to allow the Dragons a late run to create some distance.

The Trojans will stay in the MDJUCO when they entertain Cecil on Saturday.
