I enjoyed reading Steve and Cokie Roberts’ article in last Sunday’s Times-News about Christine Brennan and her special relationship with her father. Like Chris’ Dad, I have always encouraged my daughters to strive to be anything they want to be as long as they strive to be the best they can be.

When they were young, I tried to indoctrinate them in the things I enjoy: WVU athletics, Orioles baseball, hiking and canoeing.

How ironic then, that shortly after finishing the Sunday paper a Father’s Day card from the Virginia Tech engineer (makes for lively dinner conversations) is presented to dear old Dad. Inside is a sweet and heartfelt sentiment along with four tickets to the Orioles-Yankees series in August with words that are music to the old man’s ears: Yankees Suck! Nice to know that you may have had a salutary impact on your children’s lives.

The best Father’s Day presents are happy, loving, well-adjusted kids.
