BW trio heads All-City team

Khataian wins league scoring, three-point titles

CUMBERLAND — Scoring champion Kamran Khataian, Myles Clifford and Spencer Wine, who led Bishop Walsh to its first City League title in more than a decade, head this year’s All-City boys basketball team.

Also named to the team, selected by the league’s head coaches, were Casey Roberts and Cody Ellsworth of Allegany, and Jordan Helmick of Fort Hill.

Honorable mention went to Devin Lee of Fort Hill, Jordan Grady of Allegany and Dylan D’Atri of Bishop Walsh.

First-year coach Jeff Rhodes led Bishop Walsh to a 3-1 record and its first City championship since 1996.

The Spartans, who dropped an early-season game at Fort Hill, beat the Sentinels handily in the rematch and swept Allegany 54-43 and 73-64.

Bishop Walsh finished the regular season 17-6, and ended 17-9 after the ACIT.

Allegany was 22-4 and was second in the league at 2-2. Fort Hill, 7-17 overall, was third at 1-3.

• Khataian, a 5-11 senior guard and team co-captain, won the City scoring crown and also was tops in the league in three-point shooting.

He scored 95 points in the four league games with a 23.7 average, and nailed 17 three-point goals — 10 more than anyone else — for an average of more than four per game.

For the season, Khataian finished fourth in the area in scoring with 17.3 points per game, and led the area in three-point goals by hitting 78 in 25 games for 3.1 per game. He also averaged seven assists per game.

• Clifford, a 6-1 senior co-captain, gave BW two of the area’s top 10 scorers. He finished ninth among area players with a 14.6 average, and was also among the top free-throw shooters, making 58 of 89 tries for 65 percent.

Clifford finished eighth in the league in scoring, averaging 8.5 points per game. For the season, he also averaged a solid six rebounds and four steals per game.

• Wine, a 6-4 senior center, gave the Spartans strong and consistent inside play, and finished seventh in the league in scoring with a 9.2 average.

For the year, Wine was among the area’s top 25 scorers, and finished the 26-game season averaging 9.6 points and eight rebounds per contest.

• Roberts, a 6-2 junior guard, led Allegany to its fourth 20-win season in the last six years.

Roberts finished second in the City in scoring with 19.7 points per game, and was second with seven three-point goals.

Also co-Player of the Year in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference and chosen to the WHAG-TV Fab 5 team, Roberts averaged 20.5 points, four rebounds and 2.6 steals for the season. He shot 48 percent from the field and 69 percent from the foul line.

• Ellsworth, a 6-2 senior guard, finished fourth in the league in scoring with a 14.0 average, and ran away with the City foul shooting title, making 19 of 23 chances for 82.6 percent.

For the season, Ellsworth averaged 11.8 points and six rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2 steals. He shot 49 percent from the field, including 42 percent from three-point range.

• Helmick, a 6-2 senior center, finished third in the league in scoring with 60 points for a 15.0 average, and was second in foul shooting at 64 percent.

An athletic, versatile player and strong rebounder with a variety of inside moves, Helmick was 15th in the area in scoring with a 12.5 average. Also first-team All-AMAC, he also averaged 7.8 rebounds and one steal per game.
