West Virginia Dietetic Association honors former Westernport woman

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia Dietetic Association recently named Cindy Gay, retail manager of the Health Sciences Center cafeteria for West Virginia University Hospitals Nutrition Services and registered dietitian, as its Outstanding Dietitian of the Year.

“Cindy is completely dedicated to wellness through excellent nutrition and is genuinely concerned for the health of her customers,” Kendra Stoen, director of WVUH Nutrition Services, said. “When she works on modifying recipes, she does not look at just fat but also sodium, sugar, fiber, whole grains and nutrients, such as calcium, and vitamins A and C. She and her team make healthy eating easy, enjoyable and affordable.”

In 2007, the National Whole Grains Food Council invited Gay to present at its annual meeting after she helped the WVU Health Sciences Cafeteria win the Whole Grains Challenge Award for Best Healthcare Eatery for offering whole grains. The Challenge rewards restaurants and food service establishments for offering at least one whole grain option on their menus at all times.

Last spring, the West Virginia Dietetic Association asked her to give that same presentation at its 2008 meeting. As a result of that presentation, the West Virginia Department of Education Office of Child Nutrition invited her to help teach its food service directors how to make school meals more healthy and appealing.

The staff members in the Office of Child Nutrition nominated Gay for the Dietitian of the Year Award. It was presented during the West Virginia Dietetic Association’s annual meeting, which was held May 13-14 at the Bridgeport Conference Center at Charles Pointe.

A native of Westernport, Gay is the daughter of Jim and June Reeves, Westernport Road.
