Landis Office Center now in 45th year of business

CUMBERLAND — Landis Office Center, 151 N. Centre St., is celebrating 45 years in business. Landis has been serving the tri-state community from downtown Cumberland since 1964.

In 1964, Richard and Georgene McKenzie purchased a small typewriter shop on Frederick Street owned by a local businessman Myron “Chick” Landis. The McKenzies decided to keep the Landis name due to its strong recognition in the local community.

During the 1970s, the business relocated to its current location at 151 N. Centre St. and as the store expanded so did the business inventory, which now includes office supplies, furniture, janitorial supplies and Toshiba copiers. Products and services reflect customers’ needs and requests. Landis Office Center being honored as an Allegany County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business in 2006.

Today the Landis Office Center Online Ordering catalog is the fastest-growing aspect of the business. Even though their online orders are increasing, they are still followed up with personal contact.

The McKenzies have always said they didn’t become successful by themselves. “Without our employees’ loyalty, strong industry knowledge and their steadfast commitment to the customer, we would not be here today. Most of our employees have been with us for over 10 years — many 20 years or more. This is rare in any industry, but this level of consistently has helped us stay committed to the markets we serve.”

“I thank God that we live in Cumberland and Allegany County. It would be difficult to improve on this area as a place in which to live and rear a family. I said this at the Landis 25th anniversary celebration and it still holds true on the 45th,” said Richard McKenzie.

Landis will host the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce After Hours on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Those interested in attending should contact Amy Jacobs at (301) 722-2820.
