FROSTBURG — Harris-Elliott-Mackay Insurance Agency of Frostburg has entered a strategic alliance with R. Vereen & Associates, business consulting and insurance services of Cumberland to bring expanded products and services to its clients and the community.
Gene Harris Jr., owner of Harris-Elliott-Mackay, is a native of Frostburg, attended Beall High School and graduated from Frostburg State University, where he now teaches a class on risk management and insurance. He has 25 years of experience in the industry including working for insurance companies in Texas and Connecticut and is a chartered property and casualty underwriter (CPCU).
Harris is the vice president of the Frostburg Business and Professional Association. He and his wife Susan Stewart, also a native of Frostburg, have three sons. Their oldest, Stewart A. Harris, is a licensed Maryland agent, a summer intern and a student at FSU.
Robin Vereen is a native of Indiana, attended college at the University of New Mexico and lived in the San Francisco Bay area for over 25 years, where she developed her business consulting service, R. Vereen & Associates. She fell in love with Cumberland in January 2007 and relocated to the city in August.
Her services for small businesses include profitability analysis, systems development, risk management analysis and development of effective communication skills and success strategies. Vereen is licensed to sell life and health insurance as well as property and casualty in Maryland and West Virginia. She is a member of the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce and also works with the Allegany Arts Council managing the new community room.
“What this alliance does,” said Harris, “is enable us to offer our clients a truly full service agency with comprehensive advice on risk management for their life, home, auto and business needs. My experience in the various aspects of the insurance industry makes it possible for me to take the mystery out of insurance for our clients and my hometown advantage combines well with the newcomer’s perspective which Robin brings to our alliance.”
The agency has represented home state companies, Brethren Mutual and Peninsula, for many years. In 2008 the agency was appointed to represent Travelers Insurance. Travelers is just one of many national companies in the agency which include The Hartford, Farmers, Foremost, Progressive, and Dairyland. Life and health insurance companies include Hartford Life and Aflac.
