CUMBERLAND — The city of Cumberland and Cumberland Police Department are asking residents to use caution when allowing anyone to enter their home claiming they’d been called to make some type of repair or offer a service.

If the citizen did not call for the service to be performed, police advise the resident question the individual and obtain proper identification as well as a phone number for the company the person is representing. The citizen should call the business before letting the person into their home and use caution if they do not know the person or if they unexpectedly arrived at the home.

Despite checking, if the resident does not feel the situation is safe, they should not let the other person into their home.

All individuals employed by the city are issued identification cards and shirts identifying them.

If contacted by a city employee and the resident is unsure if the person is representing the city, residents can call City Hall at (301) 722-2000 or the police department at (301) 777-1600 to have identification verified. If a person cannot provide information, then they should not be allowed into the home and police should be notified.
