Potomac State sweeps Essex

ESSEX - Pete Savage had two doubles and two RBIs in the opener, and Matt Schrader and Kyle Orensky homered in nitecap to power Potomac State to a 4-3, 9-1 sweep of Essex.

The Catamounts also got solid pitching performances in each game. Andy Altemus, Nathan Fike and Kyle Blank combined for a four-hitter in the first game, and Matt Morrone and Matt Moceri teamed for a four-hitter in the second.

In the opener, the Catamounts scored a run in the first, but trailed 2-1 after Essex scored twice in the bottom of the inning. A three-run third put Potomac State on top to stay.

Savage hit RBI doubles in the first and third innings in leading a nine-hit attack. Justin Grantham doubled and singled and Brock Stevens singled twice.

Mike Sokolis hit a home run for Essex.

In the second game, the Catamounts led 2-0 after three innings and 4-1 after six before blowing it open with a five-run seventh.

Schrader finished 2-for-4 with a single, a two-run homer in the seventh and three RBIs. Orensky hit a solo shot in the fifth and Chris Szafran had a pair of singles.

Potomac State (5-3) hosts Mercyhurst Northeast in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
