Allegany streak comes to soggy end

CUMBERLAND — Chris Masser clubbed a three-run home run in the top of the first to lead Herkimer (N.Y.) County to a 3-1 win in a rain-shortened contest over Allegany College Maryland Tuesday afternoon that snapped a seven-game Trojan winning streak.

The Trojans and the Generals were supposed to play two, but because of rain were forced to settle for one five-inning game.

Masser took care of all of Herkimer’s offense with one swing of the bat in the first inning. ACM starter Dale Coombe settled down over the next four innings.

Allegany scored its run in the bottom of the second. Erik Kempton and Drew Suttmiller singled to put runners of first and second, and Chad McCoy drove Kempton home with a single of his own.

“We had a few spells where we hit the ball pretty good,” said ACM coach Steve Bazarnic. “They just all seem to be at somebody.”

Allegany (8-4) hosts Hagerstown on Thursday at 3 p.m.
