Big innings spark Garrett's wins over Sullivan, Mercer

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - One big inning in each of Garrett's two game's boosted the Lakers to two easy wins Wednesday as the team continues its spring trip in Myrtle Beach.

Garrett trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but scored eight runs to say good-bye to Sullivan (N.Y.) with an 11-4 win. The Lakers broke a 2-2 tie in the second game with a seven-run fourth that led to a 12-4 win over Mercer (N.J.).

Corey Carr smacked a pinch-hit grand slam in the fifth, two batters after Tony Russo knocked in a pair of Lakers with a single. Garrett scored its 11 runs on only five hits, and Sullivan made only one error. Keith Johnson and Alex Barth combined to allow only six hits and four runs in the win.

Sullivan took a 1-0 lead in the second, and tied the score at two with another run in the fourth. Albert Bevacqua and Ali Ferreiras each hit solo homers for the Generals

The Garrett offense piled up 15 hits in the win over Mercer, but it was the big inning that secured the win.

Russo connected for a two-run home run during the fourth, and finished with four runs batted in by adding two more singles. Carr doubled three times, and Zach Nair had two RBIs on a double and a single. Joe Wilt also had three hits, all singles.

The fourth inning started with a Carr double, followed by the Russo home run. K.J. Ventry had a two-run single in the inning, and Wilt had an RBI base hit.

The Lakers (8-7) play two again today beginning with Lackawanna (Pa.) at 3 p.m., and Parkland (Ill.) at 6 p.m.
