PSC clubs Chesapeake, 17-2

KEYSER — Mike Smith and Kevin Griffin homered, and every Catamount starter hit safely in support of winning pitcher Nathan Fike as Potomac State routed Chesapeake College 17-2 Saturday at Golden Park.

Fike struck out nine and did not walk a batter in a complete-game performance that lifted his personal record to 3-0.

Brock Stevens led Potomac State’s 17-hit attack with a double, two singles and three runs batted in.

The Catamounts, 18-4 overall and 18-1 in their last 19 games, bolted to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning. All four runs came after two were out. Stevens began things with a double and scored on a single by Kyle Orensky. After Jason Lombard was hit by a pitch, Smith hit a sinking liner to center field that snuck under the glove of Chesapeake’s diving Brian Brown and rolled all the way to the fence for a three-run inside-the-park home run.

Griffin led off the second inning with a homer to left field. Six singles — by Chris Szafran, Justin Grantham, Stevens, Orensky, Smith and Jacke Healey — extended the lead to 10-0.

Smith finished the day with four RBIs and Orensky and Stevens had three.

Mike Liddell and J.J. Corriveau drove in the runs for Chesapeake (17-7-1).

Potomac State plays at Catonsville in a 1 p.m. twinbill today.
