Frostburg State sweeps La Roche 5-4 & 4-0

PITTSBURGH — Allen Peake and Joe Garrity homered in the first game, and Trevor Conner tossed a shutout in the second as Frostburg State swept La Roche, 5-4 and 4-0, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader.

The wins enabled Frostburg State to even its overall record at 9-9. The Bobcats are 6-2 in the conference. La Roche is 16-8 overal and 4-4 in the conference.

In the opener, the Bobcats trailed 4-3 through five innings until Peake belted a two-run homer to put FSU on top to stay in the sixth. The homer capped a perfect day for Peake, who finished 3-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Garrity’s homer was also a two-run shot, in the first inning.

Reliever Gary Wolfe pitched one scoreless inning and Kevin Collier hurled a scoreless seventh for his fifth save.

In the second game, Conner, a freshman, scattered nine hits and struck out six in the shutout, his first collegiate win.

Joe Clark led the offense, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. His two-run single in the fifth snapped a scoreless tie. The Bobcats added two insurance runs in the seventh on a John Micklus bases-loaded walk and a squeeze bunt by Clark.

Frostburg State plays again today in a 4 p.m. single game at Shenandoah (Va.) University.
