Mt. Aloysius splits with Frostburg State, 8-6 and 5-6

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

FROSTBURG - Mt. Aloysius took advantage of Frostburg State errors to win the first game, but the Bobcats bounced back when Joe Garrity tripled and scored on a Andrew Lydon single in the bottom of the seventh in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference twinbill.

In the first game, the Bobcats (13-10, 8-3 AMAC) took a quick lead when Joe Clark tripled and scored on a groundout by Allen Peake in the first. They made it 2-0 in the second on Joe Daddura's solo home run.

Mt. Aloysius (16-14, 8-5) took advantage of numerous Frostburg State mental errors in the third to score six runs. After an RBI single by Bryan Nolan, the Mounties scored four runs on one hit, four passed balls and a catcher's interference. The final run scored when Josh McGinnis' high fly ball fell between two fielders an RBI double.

FSU responed in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs of its own. Jeff Kroboth scored on a throwing error and Garrity knocked in Brett Mitchell and Peake with a triple to left center to make it 6-4. The Bobcats were unable to get any closer than two runs the rest of the way.

Freddy Foshay absorbed the loss, allowing six runs, with two being earned, in three innings. He allowed six hits and struck out four. Clark led went 2-for-2 with a triple and double.

In the second game, Mt. Aloysius led 3-2 on a two-run homer by McGinnis in the fourth inning.

The Bobcats rallied in the sixth when Garrity doubled and scored on Lydon's RBI single to tie it. Lydon reached third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Derr to give FSU a 4-3 edge. Allen Peake was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 5-3.

Mt. Aloysius tied it with two runs in the seventh, gettingtwo walks and RBIs from Ryan Brandon and Nolan.

The Bobcats wasted little time in regaining the lead, and getting the win. In the bottom of the inning Garrity tripled down the right field line and scored on Lydon's hard hit ball that crept just inside the third base line.

Garrity finished 3-for-3 with a triple, double and single. John Micklus was 2-for-3 in both games.
