Frostburg State takes two from St. Mary's, 3-0 and 8-7
From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News
ST. MARY'S CITY - John Micklus singled home the winning runs in the opener, and Andrew Derr brought in the deciding run with a squeeze bunt in the second to lift Frostburg State to a pair of eight-inning victories over St. Mary's Saturday.
The wins give Frostburg State, now 20-12, its eighth consecutive 20-win season. St. Mary's dropped to 18-21-1.
In the opener, Frostburg's Joe Garrity and Ryan D'Antuono of St. Mary's battled in a pitchers duel. Garrity allowed seven hits in six scoreless innings, and D'Antuono scattered six hits and struck out eight in seven scoreless innings.
The scoreless duel ended in the top of the eighth, which began with a single by Garrity. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Joe Daddura and Andrew Lydon brought Micklus to bat with two runners on, as Daddura had reached base on a throwing error of his bunt.
Micklus came through with a two-run single, then scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Kroboth to make it 3-0.
Gary Wofe retired St. Mary's in order in the bottom of the inning for his fourth win of the season.
Garrity and Kroboth were 2-for-3 in leading the Bobcats offense.
In the second game, Derr's squeeze bunt scored Brett Mitchell to break a 7-7 tie.
The teams combined for 24 hits and both worked deep into their bullpens.
Mitchell doubled in Micklus in the fifth to cut a St. Mary's lead to 3-2, but the Seahawks scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to go up 7-2.
Frostburg rallied and, against three relievers in the seventh, for five runs to tie it. Mitchell had an RBI double and Allen Peake a two-run single to cut it to 7-5. Daddura delivered a two-run pinch single to tie it.
Micklus, who struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the seventh, got the win. Kevin Willford got a save with a scoreless eighth. St. Mary's had runners on first and third when the final out was recorded.
Frostburg State's Tuesday games against Christopher Newport (Va.) have been canceled. Additional games will be announced later this week.
