Frostburg State splits with Villa Julie on Senior Day

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

FROSTBURG - Frostburg State used a six-run second inning in a rain shortened game two to help earn a split with Villa Julie in non-conference baseball action at Bob Wells Field, Saturday. FSU dropped game one 1-0 but rebounded with a 7-1 win in game two that ended midway through the fifth inning due to heavy rain.

In the opener, VJC (21-20-1) plated the only run of the contest in the fifth inning when Nick Syndor scored George Papuchis with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The teams combined for just six hits as senior Andrew Speights and sophomore Joe Garrity each had a single for Frostburg State (21-13).

Wade Keenan tossed 7.0 allowing just two hits while striking out nine for the win for the Mustangs while sophomore Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) allowing one run and four hits in the loss for the Bobcats.

In the nightcap, FSU plated six runs in the second off of four hits and two VJC errors for a 7-1 victory.

Junior Joe Clark started the scoring in the second with a two-run single that plated Garrity and senior joe Daddura. Senior John Micklus scored on an error for the third run of the frame and classmate Allen Peake doubled home two more runs as FSU led 5-0. Peake scored the final run of the inning when Speights singled to left.

The Mustangs scored one in the top of the third and FSU answered with a single run on bottom of the third when Daddura scored on an error by the VJC infield. The game was called an inning and a half later for heavy rain and thunder.

Freshman Trevor Conner pitched all 5.0 innings with two strikeouts and four hits for his fourth win of the season. Phil Kraska endured the loss for the Mustangs after surrendering seven runs on seven hits in just 3.0 innings.

Peake finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Clark was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.

FSU travels to Erie, Pa., Friday for the 2008 AMCC Tournament.
